This year, the third meeting of the ANA&A Activity Group of SIMAI (Italian Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics) took place, born from the experience of the Italian research network on approximation RITA (Research Italian network on Approximation).

After the first two editions held in 2023 and 2024, the 2025 event confirmed the vitality and growth of a scientific community increasingly focused on the interaction between mathematical theory and practical applications.

The ANA&A group focuses on approximation theory and its numerous applications, with particular attention to mathematical models that emerge in industrial contexts and applied sciences. Research activities range from theoretical studies to the development of effective numerical solutions, as well as the creation of dedicated software based on flexible tools from approximation theory and special functions.

The goal of the meeting was to bring together researchers and professionals from both the academic and industrial sectors, who are active in the study of mathematical and numerical models for solving real-world problems.

A particular emphasis was placed on fostering dialogue between applied mathematics and industry, through interdisciplinary sessions and opportunities for discussion on practical topics.

Among the highlights of the program was the Industrial Session, organized in collaboration with the University of Salerno’s placement service. This session was also open to students and recent graduates interested in connecting with participating companies, thus fostering an important bridge between academic training and the workforce.

“This year, we at NetCom also participated in the event,” says Eng. Alfredo Troiano, Technical Director of the NetCom group, “presenting our latest research on quantum genetic algorithms applied to smart cities. Specifically, the work is focused on the optimal setup of traffic light systems in the cities of the future.”

The presentation, titled Quantum Computing and Smart Cities – An application of Quantum Genetic Algorithms to Network Signal Setting Design, was given by Eng. Alfredo Massa, an expert in quantum technologies.
